FIRE SERVICE |
In February 2008 the BSCF made submission to the Fire Service to promote a discussion on wearing of turban and being able to maintain beards in front line service. The submission was partly successful. It agreed to develop masks for beards. The Fire Service agreed to consider the possibility of a helmet to accommodate turban wearing Sikhs. |

| HOME OFFICE, BORDER AND IMMIGRATION AGENCY ON THE ISSUE OF GRANTHIS |
The Government brought in a new point based system in 2007 and imposed new conditions upon ministers of religion. It required them to be competent in English. BSCF successfully argued for a 2 tier system. It managed to persuade the Government that granthis and Kirtanis coming on short visit from 6 months to 2 years should not be required to have the competency of English necessary for those taking up service for longer duration. The submission made was after consultations with Gurdwaras around the country. |

| PLACES OF WORSHIP |
In 2005 the Government was considering introducing legislation to have powers to close down places of worship where extremism was preached or practices. BSCF was concerned about the vague and broad meaning attached to the word extremism which could also include references to past acts of sacrifices and martyrdom. It successfully opposed the ban. The submission given explained the concerns and position of BSCF. |

| BSCF STATEMENT ON FUNERAL PYRES |
When Mr Ghai decided to demand open air funeral facilities, the Sikhs were named as one of the communities requesting this. BSCF consulted with the Sikhs and put forward its position which is summarised in the statement. |

| THE KIRPAN |
In 2008, the DCLG asked BSCF for guidance on the Kirpan. It was decided to hold a wideranging consultation with Sikhs on this. After a ear of consultations, seven drafts and expert opinions. The BSCF guidance on Kirpan was developed for discussions with the Government. It was handed in 2009. |

2 months consultations on Big Society and the Sikh reponse. The Coalition Government has embarked on a policy of greater autonomy at the grassroots. It calls this Big Society. This has implications and opportunities for communities including the Sikh community. |
